The Hole in the Ground belongs to the long tradition of creepy kid movies, featuring one of the creepiest movie kids of all time.
Cronin’s film has the strength to strike fear in the heart of hardened horror fans. Coupled with incredible performances, this makes his debut feature by far the best horror film of the year so far and one of the greatest Irish horror films ever.

Alles andere als erfreut ist hingegen die junge Mutter Sarah (Seána Kerslake), als ihr Sohn Chris (James Quinn Markey) eines Tages unerlaubterweise das frisch bezogene neue Eigenheim im irischen Hinterland verlässt und im nahe gelegenen Wald verschwindet. Zurück zu Hause währt die Erleichterung nicht allzu lange. Chris verhält sich zunehmend merkwürdiger. Allmählich beschleicht Sarah der Verdacht, dass das, was aus dem Wald zurückgekehrt ist, vielleicht nur so aussehen mag wie ihr Sprössling.
